The Contributory Parent visa sub-class 173 is a temporary residence visa that allows parents who are outside Australia, live in Australia for up to two (2) years, if they are parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who has already been lawfully settled in Australia for at least two (2) years before your application is lodged. This visa is temporary, and may not be extended or renewed.

For the sub-class 173 visa, you must;

  1. have a sponsor (most applicants must be sponsored by their adult child, but not always). The sponsor must be over 18 years old, and must give a written undertaking to provide support for you for your first two (2) years in Australia, including any accompanying dependent family members. During this period, the sponsor must provide support, accommodation and financial assistance,
  2. meet the balance-of-family test – At least half of your children must lawfully live permanently in Australia. You must meet this requirement, as it cannot be waived,
  3. meet health and character requirements,
  4. provide biometrics,
  5. sign the Australian Values Statement, and
  6. have no debts to the Australian government.

You can include the following people in your visa application at the time of lodgement:

  1. your partner (married or de facto),
  2. your or your partner’s dependent children, and
  3. other dependent relatives.

These family members must meet the requirements for including family members in your application, including health and character requirements.

If this visa is approved, you have two (2) years to apply for a Permanent Contributory Parent Visa subclass 143, if you choose to do so.
